Poor, Pitiful Pug

My grandmother loved dolls, and one of her favorites was Poor, Pitiful Pearl, a sad sack urchin based on a cartoon by William Steig, one of my all-time favorite children’s book authors. Yesterday Pablo crammed himself into the small space between the bookcase and the table stand and rested his chin on a pile of magazines. His woebegone expression reminded me immediately of Grandma’s Poor, Pitiful Pearl.

I remember that doll. She was wonderful, though pitiful. As I remember, she was just called Pitiful Pearl. I’m not sure I ever knew she came from a book, especially one by William Steig. Thanks for letting me know.
