The dog days of summer have arrived, my friends. Ever wonder how the term came to be? Some quick web research revealed that it’s related to Sirius, the brightest star in the heavens (not counting the sun). And, hold on to your hats, Sirius is also known as the Dog Star. The Romans associated the sultry weather of July and August with Sirius, and in the star’s honor they sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of each summer. Pablo did not like that info one bit and is researching fur dyes as I write this.
According to a quote from 1813, Dog Days were a time “when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies.” Yup, that sounds about right.
Anticipating the heat wave, over the weekend I convinced K that a wading pool was in order. Today seemed a good a day as any to see how the pug took to water. Well, he’s no duck but he didn’t do too badly.
At first he seemed a bit bewildered.
But he quickly acclimated to his new surroundings.
Afterward he enjoyed relaxing on the lawn.
Next time we’re trying out the flippers.
